I Have Many Potatoes But No Closets (naviarhaiku550)

This original version of “I Have Many Potatoes But No Closets” was submitted as part of Naviar Haiku 550, The Huge Setting Sun

The huge setting sun –
little remains of
its power

by: Takahama Kyoshi

Takahama Kyoshi was a Japanese poet active during the Shōwa period of Japan. He was the editor of the haiku magazine Hototogisu (previously edited by Shiki), where he promoted a more traditional style of haiku, as opposed to other popular schools which did not follow the pattern of seventeen syllables at that time.

Kyoshi also highlighted the symbolic function of the kigo (the seasonal reference), even though the more modern trends were already tending towards seasonless haiku.

The Distorted People That I Know (naviarhaiku548)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh9ebY9WXcg Recorded, mixed & mastered 14 Feb 1988, 30 Nov 2023, 01 Dec 2023 & 03 Jul 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa.

The sound of silence
is all the instruction
you’ll get

by: Jack Kerouac

Like other “Beat Poets”, Jack Kerouac was attracted to Eastern philosophy, perception, and poetry. Together with Ginsberg and Whalen, he helped “Americanise” the haiku form and introduce it to a wider audience outside of Japan.

“The American Haiku is not exactly the Japanese Haiku. The Japanese Haiku is strictly disciplined to seventeen syllables but since the language structure is different I don’t think American Haikus (short three-line poems intended to be completely packed with Void of Whole) should worry about syllables because American speech is something again…bursting to pop.

Above all, a Haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and make a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi Pastorella.”

by: Masaoka Shiki

Regarded as the father of contemporary haiku, Masaoka Shiki was a poet and literary critic during the Meiji period Japan.

He advocated realistic observation by “sketching” (shasei) poems and going out into nature with notebooks, thus abandoning the traditional subjects of haiku of the time. His advice for an aspiring poet was, “Use both imaginary pictures and real ones, but prefer the real ones.”

This original version of “Go Ahead, Ernie” was submitted as part of Naviar Haiku 617: An Autumn Nightfall

an autumn nightfall

drawn back by the sea.

by: Saitō Sanki

Saitō Sanki (1900 – 1962) was a dentist who discovered his passion for haiku poetry in his mid-thirties, when his colleagues at the hospital in Soto Kanda convinced him to write a haiku for a collection. Later, he became one of the most important exponents of wartime haiku: he was imprisoned in 1940 during the government’s World War II persecution of controversial artists, and was officially forbidden to write until the end of the war.
