I put together three generative parts for this in Reason – using Grain, Europa & AudioDamage Phosphor. I then moved over the first take of this to Ableton and did some processing there – some dirt, some echo, a touch of reverb.

Kyorai was a Japanese haiku poet who first trained as a martial artist before he started writing and became one of Basho’s first disciples.

This is one of Kyorai’s most famous poem, and one that Natsume Sōseki used as an example of great haiku poetry when teaching at a high school in Kumamoto.

Process notes –
I started in Reason, using a xylophone sound and two arpeggiated synths. I did two different versions. I brought the entirety of the second longer version plus some of the first into Ableton Live 12.1. Here, I added some alto sax from 2018 and a bit of a manipulated guitar recording from 2008.

Reason, NN-XT, Europa, Ableton Live, Granulator III, alto sax, Cort Zenox, iZotope Nectar, native Live & Reason effects, iZotope Nectar & Ozone.

Process notes –
For this, I started with a very casual absently-minded piano piece using QuNexus, Noire Felt & Bitwig. I pulled a section of this – highlighting a scale including some quarter tones also making use of the flatted-fifth, (”The Devil’s Interval”), for this Disquiet Junto and another section for this week’s Naviar Haiku. Along with the piano part, I pulled into Ableton Live a resampled and stretched piece of the piano alongside a section of a SurgeXT improvisation earlier in the night. I added some effects while in Ableton.

Tools used – Bitwig, Ableton Live, Jasper Marsalis’ Tone Resonator, Puremagnetik Pastfabric & Zerone, Surge XT, Noire piano.

For this, I started with a very casual absently-minded piano piece using Noire Felt & Bitwig. I pulled a section of this for this Naviar Haiku and another section for this week’s Disquiet Junto. I moved an audio copy of this section to Ableton Live and added a dronish patch I put together in Vital. I added some Chow Tape Model to the piano track. That’s really it.

Tachibana Hokushi, whose real name was Tachibana Genjiro, was born in Kanazawa in 1665. Hokushi was one of Basho’s most famous students at the time, and he even accompanied the great master during part of his famous journey through the narrow roads of the North, from Kanazawa to Matsuoka.

For this, I started by recording two phrases into Ableton Live on a Jay Turser MG-2 “Mustang” guitar tuned to F# A# C# G# C# F. For both loops – which were different lengths – I used PitchLoop89, some compression, a warp/stretch mode and a bit of chorus. Next I used a Rogue Fretless bass and then Cherry Audio’s ARP Pro Soloist. Other items used – Live native devices and Melda plugins.
