by: Masaoka Shiki

Regarded as the father of contemporary haiku, Masaoka Shiki was a poet and literary critic during the Meiji period Japan.

He advocated realistic observation by “sketching” (shasei) poems and going out into nature with notebooks, thus abandoning the traditional subjects of haiku of the time. His advice for an aspiring poet was, “Use both imaginary pictures and real ones, but prefer the real ones.”

Peach Orchard Skiffle (disquiet0663)

https://ift.tt/WyGJwdF

Recorded & mixed on 13 Sep 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa.

Process notes –
Bitwig – I started in Bitwig by pulling four samples from Freesound.org, including the one offered for use with this project. After this, I applied different settings of the Tuner device, very wet, different stretch modes and some limiting before exporting the 4 stems.

I grabbed my iPad and sat in the cool night air with AudioKit’s Synth One and recorded a few slow takes on the same arpeggio.

Ableton Live –
– I pulled in all four of Freesound samples. I warped each one differently, grouped the HDD Sounds together & applied pitch correction in Nectar along with some CHOWTapeModel. I grouped the other two sounds together and applied Corpus on a beam setting.
– I used 6 different pieces of the Synth One recordings, with some filtering applied to some and used Caellum Audio’s Tape Cassette 2 on one of these tracks.
– I pulled three bits of a Max session from 19 Apr 2024 as some icing on this cake, using the same basic Corpus patch as the second Freesound set.
– I mixed it – just went with it

Title – I just liked how the word “orchard” contains the word “hard.”

by: Kubota Shunko

A supporter of Kobayashi Issa, Kubota Shunko was the husband of the more famous Kubota Seifu. He was responsible for preserving one of his master’s works: Last Days of Issa’s Father (父の終焉日記, Chichi no Shūen Nikki), a poignant account of his father’s final days. The text was passed down by generations of Shunko’s descendants.

Drew A Two Pound Yam (disquiet0662)

https://ift.tt/cQDZ2j9

Recorded & mixed on 06 Sep 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa.

Process notes –
I started by putting together a quick melody using a stock preset in Ableton Live, duplicated it and skewed the second version in a few different ways. After this, I set up my sounds with Live’s Operator away from the stock preset and then came up with a pad part. I decided to copy the first two tracks melody and manipulated it into a bass part. A little audio rendering and editing later, I was complete.

Tools used –
Ableton Live, Operator, Electric & other native Live devices

Artwork/Photography –
Kings Park, NY 07 Sep 2015

Bags Of Mostly Verdant Electrons (disquiet0661)

https://ift.tt/NrSXLyJ

Recorded & mixed on 07 Nov 2009 & 30 Aug 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa.

Process notes –
I started with a Nov 2009 “home field recording” I made using a small 1960s transistor radio to detect/probe electromagnetic fields around my apartment, which itself was inspired by Nicolas Collins’ book *Handmade Electronic Music.*

I recorded this using a Sony Cybershot DSC-W50. I recorded things like computer hard drives, a Blackberry phone, a TV, an electric toothbrush, a microwave, a refrigerator and light fixtures using this technique. Not sure what made it onto this piece.

I selected small pieces of this 9.5 minute recording and dragged them into a total of 11 tracks in Ableton Live. Some tracks use MIDI instruments and others play the tracks in real time or altered with Live’s warping modes.

Tools used –
Ableton Live, IRCAM IM-Mover, Slate + Ash Cycles, Ableton Granulator III & other native Live devices

The full audio/video for this “radio probe” source can be heard/seen on my YouTube here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK4vmRqBd68.

I put together a small body of raw material inspired by the book back in 2009, some of it is still on YouTube. The YouTube videos use Magix Music Maker for video editing, IIRC.

Artwork/Photography – Long Island, NY, USA, North Fork – 19 Oct 2008 – using the same Sony camera mentioned above.

by: Ōshima Ryōta

Ōshima Ryōta was a Japanese poet of the Edo period. Some sources say he was a disciple of Yosa Buson, while others say his master was Hattori Ransetsu. He’s mostly remembered for his essay “Bashō ku kai” 芭蕉句解 (‘Study of Bashō’s haiku’) published in 1759, a magnum opus of his studies and literary theories on Matsuo Bashō’s work.
